Hello everyone! Welcome to our newsletter. Reflect • Relate • Renew—the online magazine for the caregiver of a relative with a mental disorder who needs solutions to challenging family problems while increasing his or her joy and resilience at the same time.
I, Batiyah Lampl, was motivated to put this publication together out of my experience as a caregiver of more than one dear family member who has a mental disorder. When I took the Basic Class from NAMI (Nat’l Alliance for Mental Illness) for parents and grandparents of children with a mental illness, one of the things they stressed at the last class was the importance of self-care. They gave us a “Self-Care Inventory” from the Mental Health Services for Homeless Persons, Inc. out of Cleveland, OH. That inventory asked us to rate how well we were taking care of ourselves in several areas, including: Physical, Psychological, Emotional, Spiritual, and Work Place/Professional Self-Care.
This handout gave me the idea for what topics include in this newsletter, and I looked for experts that could address these different areas. It is my pleasure to present their wisdom and expertise with the goal of helping each of us do a better job when it comes to self-care. I, like you, have been challenged when faced with the difficulties that come from living with a loved with a mental disorder. I am the mother of 3 adult children and grandmother of 8. See more on my personal reasons for starting this magazine.
While we all have a lot on our plates, we want to make the journey with more peace and resilience. Above all, we need to learn self-care.
